How To Ship Wheel Loaders

If you need long-haul transport for a wheel loader, you’ll need the services of a truck and trailer to haul it to its destination. There are a few things you’ll need to do to prepare your wheel loader for the trip before you book a hauler’s services, which you can do easily through FR8Star. This service is free to shippers and provides access to a network of qualified transport companies with expertise in shipping wheel loaders and other heavy haul loads.

Prepare Your Wheel Loader for Transportation

FR8Star’s experienced drivers will use the wheel loader’s dimensions and weight you provide, as well as any available loading methods such as a dock, to determine the right trailer for the job. Thus, it’s critical to supply them with accurate measurements of your machine.

Removable gooseneck (RGN), lowboy, and step deck trailers are commonly used for shipping medium-to-large-sized wheel loaders. Smaller, compact wheel loaders have many more options such as flatbeds, double drops, hot shots, and traveling axle trailers.

Lowboy trailers are popular for transporting larger wheel loaders and their attachments because they can help keep a tall load from triggering regulatory requirements. If the height of the load on the trailer is more than 13.5 feet tall, it will require a permit for transport and possibly a pilot car with a height pole (aka a high pole or hi-pole). Likewise, a load that is wider than 8.5 feet requires an oversize (OS) load permit, while a load wider than 12 feet necessitates escort vehicles such as flag cars. The wheel loader’s manufacturer may provide instructions on reducing the height of specific components of the machine, such as by removing roof-mounted lights or tall exhaust components.

Secure any items that could come loose during transport, and remove any extraneous items from the loader’s cab and storage bins. Ensure that any hatches, windows, and doors are closed and properly latched. Also, if poor weather conditions are in the forecast, talk with the hauler to prepare accordingly and minimize the risk of damage to your wheel loader.

When Ready To Ship

Most drivers will load the wheel loader with the bucket end facing the rear of the trailer. Some will prefer to remove the bucket and load it separately. After loading, make sure that the driver uses the wheel loader’s intended strapdown points to strap or chain it in place. The transport company should use chocks to immobilize the wheels. You may want to tape a sheet of cardboard across the cab window that’s facing forward to protect it from debris.

Most haulers will send you photos of the loaded machine at both the beginning and endpoint of the journey, but don’t hesitate to take your own pics to document the wheel loader’s condition before it is driven away. FR8Star representatives and the hauler are available throughout the trip to resolve any issues and ensure the process goes smoothly.
